The Bamboo People by Mitali Perkins is the story of two young people and choices. Chiko wants to be a teacher, but at the age 0f 15 is forced into the Burmese Army. Tu Reh is 17 and just wants a house, a rice field and a family, but since the Burmese Army burned his village he wants revenge. The two boys learn about themselves and each other when they meet in the jungle. Recommended for grades 5 - 8.

My Life as a Book by Janet Tashjian is a summer reading story with a main character who hates to read. Actually he does like to read Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes, but he doesn't believe school assignments should interfere with his summer. He has big plans, like using avacadoes as hand gernades with his best friend and riding his skateboard. For readers and nonreaders in grades 4 and up.
