Think Cinderella, but instead of a nasty stepmother, Gracie has a mean stepfather and instead of a fairy godmother, she has a talking bat to help her on her journey. But, she's not going to a ball, she's going to the castle of the Ancient Crones and there are no mice turned into horses, it's her own two feet that will have to take her there. Oh, yeah, and the bat isn't very trustworthy or dependable. If you like adventure stories with a little magic, a few twists and turns and a touch of traditional fairy tale try The Robe of Skulls by Vivian French. You might want to try the sequel, The Bag of Bones too.
