The Kids Have Spoken . . .
On January 26 the winner of the 2009 Caldecott Medal will be announced. The Caldecott Medal is awarded annually "to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children".
Now the committee that decides who gets the award is generally made up of librarians, and they usually pick well, but we at the WPL also like to see who the children would have picked. To that end, our Stories and More crew, all in kindergarten through third grade, took a look at some 30 or so of the potential nominees. Looking carefully at the pictures, the kids selected their favorites and voted. Here are this year's picks:
Winners (it was a tie!):
Tadpole Rex by Kurt Cyrus
Night of the Veggie Monster by George McClements
Honor Books (aka the runners up):
Swing! by Rufus Butler Seder
We Are the Ship: the Story of Negro League Baseball by Kadir Nelson
