A Drowned Maiden's Hair by Laura Amy Schlitz
Maud has felt unloved for a very long time. First her mother died and then someone adopted her older brother and younger sister, but they didn't want her. At the orphanage she is often sent to the outhouse for bad behavior. But when Hyacinth hears her singing in the outhouse, she knows that Maud is the perfect child for she and her sisters to adopt and bring into the family business. Maud's not sure what the family business is and is a little concerned about being a secret child, but if it means love, why not? A melodrama for grades 4 - 7.
