The Story of Salt by Mark Kurlansky and S.D. Schindler
Wow, salt doesn’t just make your French fries taste good! It’s also essential for human life. And although it’s widely available and cheap today, that wasn’t always the case. Salt once built empires. Gold--who cares!--Roman soldiers were paid with salt. Salt also played an important role in domesticating animals, food preservation and the discovery of oil. Those little white crystals have quietly directed the progress of human civilization since we crawled out of the sea, the salty sea. Recommended for grades 3-6.
